Workshop 1

Data Science for Finance and Complexity Economics

Anirban Chakraborti, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

Abstract: Real-world systems are often "complex", characterised by dynamic, evolving, and interconnected components. Examples of such systems displaying "complexity" can be found in social, biological, environmental and physical sciences. The study of these "complex systems" requires analysing large amounts of data, utilising data science techniques from fields like mathematics, statistics, network science, and machine learning. In this workshop, we will discuss these data science approaches and their applications to financial markets and complexity economics.

Short Bio:Anirban Chakraborti is currently a professor at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He graduated with a master's in physics from the University of Calcutta, obtained his Ph.D. in physics from Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics (Jadavpur University), and completed a Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (HDR) in physics at Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris. He has more than two decades of experience as an academician and held various positions, including serving as the registrar at JNU, an associate professor at the Chair of Quantitative Finance at Ecole Centrale Paris, and a lecturer in theoretical physics at Banaras Hindu University. His postdoctoral research was conducted at Brookhaven National Laboratory, USA, and Helsinki University of Technology (now Aalto University), Finland. He has also served as the Dean of Research & Development and Dean of School of Engineering and Technology at BML Munjal University, Gurugram. His pioneering research works in Econophysics, Sociophysics and Complex Systems have been published as books, edited volumes, and research articles. Chakraborti was awarded the Young Scientist Medal by the Indian National Science Academy in 2009, and elected as a Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS-UNESCO) in 2023.

Workshop 2

Data Driven Macroeconomics

Bikramaditya Datta, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur

Abstract: The lectures provide tools to analyze economies subject to macroeconomic influences, both foreign and domestic. Participants will be introduced to the key macroeconomic concepts, followed by a demonstration of the corresponding data. The focus is on developing insights to aid in sensible policy advice as well as investment decisions.

Short Bio:Bikramaditya Datta is an Assistant Professor of Economics at IIT Kanpur. He received his Ph.D. in Economics from Columbia University. Previously he received a B.S. in Economics from Presidency College, University of Calcutta and an M.S. in Quantitative Economics from the Indian Statistical Institute. His research fields are Stochastic Modelling and Financial Engineering. His recent research includes investigations into contracts related to pensions, risk management, innovation, and weather-based insurance markets.

Who Can Apply?

Prerequisites

Some basic computing knowledge (and coding experience in some language like R/Python) is recommended. Basic concepts of statistics, probability, linear algebra and high School calculus will be very helpful. Creative thinking, learnability and "can do" attitude is extremely important.

Participants will be doing hands-on projects with R.
